Trailers

CH 03
Official Trailer1:01

A late-night TV commercial from 1998 for a game that’s somehow coming out today. Chess Fighter puts a twist on classic chess: every time you capture a piece, the two fighters face off in rock, paper, scissors. And yes, it has FULL MOTION VIDEO, with a live-action ending for each of its 25 fighters.

Rivalries Trailer1:15

Three rivalries, three rounds. The cop faces the thief, the hero takes on the comedian, and the master goes up against the samurai. Each gets to make their case in their own ending, but in the end, the board decides who wins.

Introduction0:34

TLDR for little attention spammed gamers

How it plays

Move. Fight. Finish.

A real 8x8 board and real chess moves. The pieces are fighters, and taking one doesn't just happen: it has to be won.

1
The board, mid-match

Move

Draft six fighters as your king, queen, rook, bishop, knight and pawn. They move by chess rules, and before the match you bury a hidden trap on your side of the board.

2
Choosing rock, paper or scissors in the duel pit

Fight

Attack a piece and the camera cuts to the pit. Both fighters throw rock, paper or scissors, best of three. Abilities bend the odds: a shield blocks a lost round, a first strike hits harder, a healer recovers after every win.

3
A finisher lands

Finish

Win the duel and the loser goes out to your fighter's own finisher. Lose, and your attacker is knocked back a square. Take the king to take the match.

Every capture is a fight. Every fight is rock, paper, scissors. Every rock, paper, scissors is extremely serious.

25 FMV endings

Clear an arcade tower with a fighter as your king and you unlock their ending: a short live-action film in the proud tradition of 1998 arcade cabinets. A fog machine, one dramatic zoom, lines delivered with total conviction, and a twist in the last two seconds.

The roster

25 fighters

A traffic cop from Istanbul, a mummy with a lease problem, a grandmother with a rolling pin. Every fighter has an ability, a finisher, three costumes, a rival and an ending. Pick one to read their file.

Modes

Arcade! Versus! Online!

Arcade The arcade tower

Climb a tower of CPU opponents with one team. The last one up there is always your king's rival. Clear a tier and that fighter earns a new costume.

  • Contender 4 fights.
  • Circuit 6 fights. Unlocks the second costume.
  • Gauntlet 8 fights, no roster changes. Unlocks the third costume.
Versus Drafting a team

One match against the CPU, or against a friend on the same screen. Draft a team, pick an arena, bury your traps, play.

  • Easy The CPU makes mistakes.
  • Normal The CPU plays the board properly.
  • Hard The CPU learns your throws and plays against them.
  • Two players Hand the device over.
Online An online room

Rooms for up to 8 players. Two fight while the rest watch the same match live, the winner stays on, and the next in line takes the open seat.

  • Quick match or a room code for your friends.
  • Ratings and world standings.
  • Rematch when you both say so.
Play it your way
